TOUGH BAPTISM FOR TRUST TEAM ARDEN
After months of testing and diligent fine-tuning, the long wait is over: the 2008 GP2 Series began in earnest this afternoon with the season’s opening qualifying session at the Circuit de Catalunya, near Barcelona, Spain.

The campaign began on a difficult note, however, for Trust Team Arden: Swiss driver Sébastien Buemi crashed heavily just eight minutes into the half-hour session and his brand-new Dallara sustained serious damage – as did the circuit’s protective tyre barriers. The qualifying session had to be interrupted, to allow marshals to effect repairs, and Sébastien – fifth fastest at the time of the accident – slumped to 20th.
Dutchman Yelmer Buurman will start tomorrow’s race from 18th place in the second trust Team Arden entry: the 21-year-old Formula Three graduate acquired useful pre-season experience during the inaugural GP2 Asia campaign, but this will be his maiden event in the mainstream GP2 Series.
Sébastien:
“It’s a real shame, seeing the car in such a mess. I think we could have been comfortably inside the top 10. We’d improved the handling since this morning’s free practice session and I was just coming up behind Pablo Nocera, who was going quite slowly on the right-hand side of the track. I took my normal racing line… but he then did the same as we came out of the corner. I had no choice but to run wide. My car then bottomed out on the grass and spun back across the track into the tyre wall. Still, I know we are quick so I haven’t given up hope of scoring points tomorrow.”
Yelmer:
“That was a bit disappointing. The GP2 Asia Series went so well for us, but I had a few issues with my car during this morning’s free practice. Things were better in qualifying, but with all the traffic and so many yellow flags it was difficult to get a clear lap. Like Sébastien, my goal is to score some points tomorrow.”
