Sébastien Buemi scored Trust Team Arden’s maiden podium finish of the GP2 Series campaign with a strong drive to second place at Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya.
Published: Sunday April 27, 2008
Starting from the front row after his seventh place in yesterday’s feature race, he was forced onto the grass shortly after the start – as pole position qualifier Kamui Kobayashi (DAMS) defended his lead – and that cost the Swiss driver a place to Romain Grosjean (ART). After that, he withstood race-long pressure from Giorgio Pantano (Racing Engineering)… and moved up to second when stewards handed Grosjean a drive-through penalty for making “more than one change of direction” while defending his lead from Kobayashi.
After starting 19th, Buemi’s team-mate Yelmer Buurman made steady progress through the lower midfield and to finish an encouraging 10th.
Sébastien: “I made a good start, but Kobayashi put me on the grass so I lost a position to Grosjean. I was slow for the first few laps and was struggling to keep Pantano behind me, but after that I settled into a rhythm and got faster and faster. I benefited from Grosjean’s penalty to move up to second – and this is a fantastic result given the way our weekend began.”
Yelmer: “At the start a car stalled a couple of rows in front of me – I saw it very late and only just avoided it. I had to brake, too, which cost me a few places. I recovered some of them at Turn Four, where I took the outside line, but I then had to take to the grass to avoid Karun Chandhok’s car, which was sitting in the middle of the road after a spin. That cost me more ground, but from there I managed to pass quite a few cars. I’m satisfied with 10th, but I know there is more to come.”
