SIXTH PLACE FOR FIGHTBACK KING BUEMI

Just as he did in Barcelona a fortnight ago, Arden GP2 racer Sébastien Buemi underlined his racecraft with a stirring recovery drive after yesterday’s qualifying disappointment.

Starting 16th, the rising Swiss star gained ground during a chaotic opening lap and drove steadily thereafter to take a strong sixth place. He is one of only two drivers to have scored points in each of the opening three races. Team-mate Yelmer Buurman was a victim of the early carnage – he sustained a painful hand injury in a collision at the first turn, but pressed on regardless to finish 14th.

Sébastien:

“I made a reasonable start, but then found myself squeezed between Adam Carroll and Pastor Maldonado. I had to brake and lost a couple of places, but I was able to get them back later on. We had an excellent pit stop, which allowed me to get ahead of Carroll, and after that I just focused on pulling away. I passed Javier Villa when the Safety Car came out, which put me sixth, and I stayed there until the end. It’s a good result in the light of qualifying, but we still need to improve if we are to have a chance of staying with the leading cars tomorrow.”

Yelmer:

“I made a good start but one of the BCN cars collided with me at the first corner, which caused me to spin and lose quite a few places. The impact hurt my hand, so it was a pretty tough race for me. The car sustained a bit of damage, too, so I’m actually quite happy with the result. Tomorrow, though, we can hopefully do better.”
