BIZARRE RACE YIELDS ANOTHER PODIUM FOR BUEMI

For the second consecutive GP2 weekend, Sébastien Buemi signed off with a flourish after taking his Trust Team Arden to a podium finish in the Sunday morning sprint.

Published: Sunday May 11, 2008

Lining up on the inside of row two, Buemi moved up to second on the opening lap when pole position man Adam Carroll (FMS) slowed with a technical problem. The race was then neutralised almost immediately following a series of first-lap incidents – one of which forced out Buemi’s team-mate Yelmer Buurman. The Dutchman was tapped into a spin within a couple of corners of the start and his car came to rest in the gravel with serious rear wing damage.

Buemi resumed in second after the restart, but subsequently had to yield to eventual winner Romain Grosjean (ART). Nevertheless, third place maintained his 100 per cent points-scoring record for the season and moves him up to third in the championship.

Bizarrely, the race had to be interrupted by a second Safety Car period after two stray dogs ran on the track: one of them collided with sixth-placed Bruno Senna’s car, which suffered heavy damage in the impact. The driver, fortunately, was unhurt.

Sébastien: “My start was good, but I couldn’t see very well whether Vitaly Petrov was behind me or to the side of me. I didn’t turn in, because I didn’t want to risk an accident, and promptly lost a place to Petrov. Romain Grosjean overtook me after the Safety Car went in, and then there was the dog incident – I just missed one of them. I was faster than Petrov but there was no opportunity to overtake. We still need to improve, but I can’t complain about my results so far this season, or my championship position.”

Yelmer:“I made a good start and gained a few places, but Adrian Valles picked up a puncture and hit Andreas Zuber, who in turn collided with me and pushed me off the track. The car felt better than it did yesterday, but I just seem to be unlucky at the moment.”
